Meta Quest 3 New Features
Some people are now referring to the Quest 3 as the “Quest 3.5” because of all its new updates. Meta is rolling out a new update called v60 to improve the overall user experience.
They will be providing better performance for the device’s CPU and GPU while running mixed reality applications.
Meta is adding additional homes to hang out at including:
Blue Hill Gold Mine
Storybook and
Lakeside Peak
Inside homes you can hang out with friends, watch TV shows, and do many other things.
VR Goggles for Mice
Northwestern University recently launched a study that equips mice with VR goggles. These are the tiniest VR goggles the world has ever seen!
The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of how animals think. The goggles allow scientists to study reactions in their brains to simulations on the VR headsets.
A lot of lab scientists see tons of different use cases for changing the way lab testing has been traditionally done.
Pico Cancels Quest Competitor
Pico Interactive is pulling the plug on its latest headset release.
Instead of focusing on competing with Meta’s Quest headsets, they are going to take a higher end route and compete with Apple’s Vision Pro.
Meta’s Quest 3 launch has been a pretty big flop by all accounts so this could have certainly played a role.
Major layoffs at Pico also likely played a role in this decision. Overall reports show that Pico is focusing on the hardware side of the business going forward.
The Future of Virtual Reality
Where do we believe VR has the biggest disruptive potential? Let’s take a look at the biggest player in VR:
Mark Zuckerberg.
Social media is no longer just an element of day to day life. Most people essentially live on social media. The average person spends 2 hours and 24 minutes per day on social media.
Most of Gen Z grew up with social media and have never lived a life that wasn’t online.
Social media is only going to grow.
…and it seems that Mark Zuckerberg wants VR to play a major role in it.
Imagine if the average IG user didn’t just pull up the app on their phone, but stepped into a VR world.
When you get into your Meta Horizon Home, you aren’t just seeing your friends, family, and coworkers.
But all the big influencers people follow are in there as well and you can interact with them.
If there’s anything we’ve learned from Instagram over the last few years, it’s that they are very good at getting people addicted to their social media platforms.
If Zuckerberg’s Reality Labs is able to achieve similar results with VR as they have with Facebook and Instagram, they will essentially usher in a completely new world.
Only time will tell.

We are currently debating whether we want to turn this newsletter into a “general disruptive tech” newsletter? We’ve talked to a few of our readers. We’ve also run reports on where our readers come from.
It’s clear to us that our audience is also very interested in disruptive tech as a whole (and so are we).
Should we turn this into a general disruptive tech newsletter (I.E. Crypto, AI, VR)? Or stick with only VR? |
