Meta Connect - What To Expect?
September 26th, 2023
Welcome to this weeks’ edition of The Future of VR newsletter. Thanks for subscribing to our list!
Before diving into updates, do you mind doing us a quick favor? We just launched the Future of VR Twitter page. Shoot us a quick follow - we’re giving out a free Meta Quest 3 for one lucky follower (full details on this will come after Meta’s connect event tomorrow/Thursday).
Meta Connect 2023
This Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg will be going live at 1:00 EST to reveal the new Meta Quest 3 and talk about how Meta will be taking over the world of Virtual Reality with it.
Their 2 day event will be covering everything they’re doing in AI, VR, and mixed/augmented realities.
They’re kicking things off with a keynote presentation from Zuckerberg himself. They will also hold several other talks including:
Developer State of the Union (Wednesday 2:45 EST)
The Meta Quest 3 Launch (Thursday at 1:00 EST)
Everything You Need to Know To Build On Meta Quest (Thursday 1:00 EST)
This will air live on Facebook and can also be visited in Horizon Worlds.
Meta’s long term involvement is actually one of the primary reasons why we’re so bullish on virtual reality long term.
They initially entered VR in 2014 (9 years ago) with the acquisition of Oculus.
Since then Zuckerberg has bet billions of dollars on VR. They acquired Beat Games, the studio behind Saber which powers Meta’s hardware.
Meta’s Quest store has become a leading US app platform since then with more than 500 apps available for download.
Earlier this year, Meta acquired Within, a VR developer in the fitness space, for $400M. Despite an FTC lawsuit aimed at blocking the acquisition, they still proceeded.
Since 2022 alone, Meta has lost $22B on virtual reality yet continues to push through.
That shows a very high level of conviction in Virtual Reality, which gives us a ton of confidence to keep focusing on VR (despite the fact that user growth hasn’t met expectations so far).
Be sure to check out Meta Connect tomorrow/Thursday.
