TODAY IN VIRTUAL REALITY

Sam Altman - CEO of OpenAI was fired on Friday

Sam Altman Fired from OpenAI

Yes, yes, we know that this is a VR newsletter. But this news was too big not to bring up. Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard that Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI - the parent company of ChatGPT) was outed by the board on Friday.

We personally believe that the future holds a lot of crossover between disruptive tech (AI, Crypto, and VR will all effect one another).

…and this is a HUGE deal for for disruptive tech.

OpenAI’s explanation for his firing was a cop-out answer in our opinion (failure to disclose information to the board). Will we ever find out the REAL reason why Sam Altman was fired? Did Altman have a massive breakthrough in AGI that could potentially eliminate the human race?

Tough to say.

But something very sketchy is going on over there at OpenAI in our opinions. (side note: Altman wasn’t the only one fired. Their entire leadership was shuffled up).

Meta Quest 2 Holiday Sale

Now that our speculation about the future of humanity is out of the way…

On a more positive note, Meta has started an early holiday sale.

If you’ve been meaning to pick up a Quest headset but want to save some cash, you can snag a Quest 2 for $50 off this week. We will not be partaking since we grabbed a Quest 3 last month (and highly doubt the Quest 3 will have a sale anytime soon).

MyDearest Secures $7.8M

MyDearest, the VR studio behind the Chronos franchise, just secured $7.8M in funding from SBI Investment Co.

Their plan is to expand upon existing IP for Quest 2 and PSVR 2.

MyDearest has largely sold to the Japanese market. One of their main goals is to use this funding to expand sales worldwide and enter into countries outside of just Japan.

The Future of Virtual Reality

The Musee d’Orsay, a prominent Parisian art museum well known for their Impressionist painting collection, recently started using VR experiences for visitors.

They launched Van Gogh’s Palette, an immersive and interactive experience that allows you to feel as if you are Van Gogh exploring a new work of art.

They also launched an AI version of Van Gogh who will answer questions from viewers.

We see this as a part of an industry that’s going to be absolutely HUGE over the coming decades: VR tourism.

The travel industry has really taken off over the last decade. However, a lot of people either:

A) Can’t afford to travel or

B) Can’t take time off to travel

VR headsets have the capability to capture many elements of the experience.

Games To Try:

  • Superhot VR

  • Beat Saber

  • Batman: Arkham VR
