Meta Returns to China

Meta is reportedly in a deal with Tencent (the world’s biggest videogame company who is based out of China). If this goes through, China will be the exclusive seller of Meta headsets in China.

The alleged plan is to have a lower priced headset sometime early 2024. Interesting move by Meta and most likely a direct attack on Bytedance (I.E. the company that owns TikTok) whose Pico Division has been struggling this year. Which actually brings us to our next point:

Pico Layoffs

Last month, a viral tweet went out claiming that Bytedance was shutting down its VR headset division (Pico Interactive).

Bytedance has dismissed the tweet…but they are also dismissing several hundred employees. Apparently their CEO, Zhou Hongwei, wants to place more of a focus on building hardware going forward.

Magic Leap 2 Updates:

Magic Leap 2 released some massive updates just yesterday. Apparently their hand-tracking accuracy is now 6x better than it previously was. They’ve added Biometric unlocking and authentication. Casting and capturing for sharing/streaming has improved. Lastly they’ve had several improvements targeted toward helping developers.

The Future of Virtual Reality

The NBA is going to stream games this fall! Games will be available on Xtadium on Quest and Meta Horizon Worlds.

Fans need to purchase an NBA League pass in order to watch. If you’re interested in doing a live watch party, that’s an option on Meta Horizon Worlds.
